Mikhail Bennett — Come Home Before Winter

The leaves are almost gone now
There's frost along the road
I brought the firewood inside
Like we did years ago
Your room is just as quiet
Your pictures on the wall
I know you've built a life out there
I'm not asking for it all
Come home before winter sun before
The first snow falls
Come sit beside this old man
And tell me how you are
I don't need an apology
Don't bring me anything
Just come while there's still time
For us to talk again
Your mother loved this season
She'd have supper on by five sometimes
I swear this old house still
Remembers her life
And son, I'm getting older
There's something
I can't hide
I don't know
HOW MANY winners
God STILL HAS BY MY SIDE
Come home before winter sun
Before another year is gone
We'll talk about the little things
Oh, we don't have
To talk it all
I
Won't ask where you been
I won't tell you where you went wrong
Just walk back through that doorway
And let your father hold his son
