Dlej — I Came For Milk

10 at night, corner store, automatic
Sliding door.
Basket?
No, I
Won't need one.
Milk and then
I'm gone
Walked past chips, kept my pace
Chocolate staring in my face.
Buy one
Get one little sign.
Okay, maybe that
One's mine.
I came for milk
Just for milk
Now there's something in each hand
I came for milk
Turned around, aisle three, something
Else was calling me.
Coffee cans
Were half the price.
Put in two
That should be fine.
Saw the noodles
Stacked up high, thought of lunch for
Monday night.
Eggs were sitting
Right below, six more things and here we go
I came for milk
Just for milk
How am
I still walking around
I came for milk
No basket, my mistake
Both my arms about to break.
Bread on top, juice below, still one aisle left
To go.
Phone buzz, what took so long?
I looked down, they weren't wrong.
Tight back
Almost at the door, then
I found one
Special offer.
I came for milk
Just for milk now
I'm carrying half the store
I came for milk
Check out line number four, dropped my
Crackers on the floor.
Lady smiled and picked them up.
I said, "Thanks." and held my stuff.
"Cash your ass
Need a bag." Looked at everything
I had
One bag.
No, better make it two
There was nothing else to do
I came for milk
Just for milk
Two full bags and one receipt
I came for milk
Walked outside, crossed the street
Plastic handles on my wrists.
Halfway
Home, I stopped and thought
Something here had been forgot.
Checked
Both bags beneath the light.
Bread and noodles, eggs inside.
Coffee
Chocolate, juice was there.
But the milk
Was nowhere
I came for milk
Came for milk
Turned around and laughed out loud
I forgot the milk
